I don't know that I care enough about baseball to be considered a fan of any team. But fan or not, the "curse of the Bambino" that haunted the Red Sox until their World Series Win 3 years ago really did seem like a raw deal. One bad trade and the team is cursed for eternity? That's like getting life in prison for illegal parking. Hardly seems fair. And in the arena of defeatism, Boston baseball fans certainly had Philly beat. Afterall, Philly had grabbed a Series title as recently as 1980. Beantowners had to ask their great grandfathers what it was like to have a championship team. Of course, when things went sour, Bostonians could blame the curse. Phillies fans could blame, well, Mitch Williams (remember him?).
Boston ached for that win 3 years ago, and earned it...the pot made no less sweet by a stunning comeback from a 0-3 deficit to best their arch rival NY Yanks 4 games to 3 in the penant race. And nobody even remembers the Cardinals' performance in that year's World Series. Except maybe the Cardinals.
But now it's 2007. And the Sox have won again, proving that the curse is, at last, truly broken. And Saint Loonies can take heart. The Colorado Rockies made the '04 Cards look great. Afterall, the Rockies meltdown took them from a bulletproof team that had 21 wins in their 22 games leading up to the Series... to the Bad News Bears in their last 4 against the Sox.
So congratulations, Sox fans! It really is safe to feel good about Boston baseball again.
PS - Wonder if Johnny Damon watched the game last night?
