I've never liked the phrase, "Don't judge me." Each of us judges others every day, perhaps not with finality (as in: "Should I disregard this person and all their opinions?") but in little ways (as in: "What an unfortunate haircut.") I myself am full of strange little biases (e.g., I find that people who drive ragtop Jeeps drive selfishly, almost all the time). But living for 4 years in a blue-collar, predominantly Catholic suburb has caused a spike in the my number of biases. For example...
- I no longer trust the views of people who have more children than they have books.
- I'd rather meet the people in line at a methadone clinic than in line at a Dairy Queen.
- Good parenting does not include the phrase "Just slap 'em, they'll be quiet."
- Cosmetology college is NOT college. Art college IS college.
I've always considered myself "No Collar" when it comes to demographics. I've worked in offices and in delicatessens, in a tie and a t-shirt, and have never liked any of it. I have no sympathy for the carpet-bagging, Porsche-driving arbitragers and mortgage bankers that caused the current recession, but am not sure that the work-a-day, salt-of-the-earth types are much better. Truth is, I've never really found my tribe, except perhaps at the bars and among the panhandlers and street freaks.
Maybe if Lewis Black were Emperor of the World, I could live with that.
In any case, I'm sure some of you, if there are any left, will judge me for this. Go ahead. We all do it.
Lewis Black for President! I like the sounds of that! The plain truth of it is that all people suck some of the time and too many people suck most of the time. :D
